Virtual ParentCamp is back! We have missed you! – Get connected, strengthen, collaborate, bring a friend!

2020-10-07-vpc

We have missed all of our Virtual ParentCamp friends over the past month!  We are so looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces this week!

Ready…here we go with this week’s line-up.  Oh!  It took a lot of time, but we have a NEW registration function this week.  Now when you register, you will immediately receive an email confirmation along with the Zoom link to join us.  We are excited about this new functionality.

Room 1[Strengthen] Llegar a los padres donde estan: Conectando familias ESOL en un mundo virtual Meeting families where they are. – Connecting ESOL families in a virtual world

Theresa Cruz, Hispanic Family Engagement Coordinator, Learning Grove, in Florence, Kentucky joins us again in the room.  Thank you Theresa!  Theresa has a great idea for getting ESOL families to join Virtual ParentCamp….many families are not quite sure about joining a Zoom conversation.  Have you thought about hosting a small gathering (social distant) at a location in your community and having the group join on the Zoom?  Theresa has done it and it worked great Let us know if you would like to give it a try.  We would be happy to help!

Room 2 – [Strengthen] InterPlay:  Listening to the Body: Release Stress, Return to Joy

We are thrilled to have Agnotti Cowie, Liaison and Development Director at InterPlay join us this week.  It is going to be engaging session, she is going to get you up and moving. Yes!  Even on Zoom!

“Theatre has the power to unite, communicate, connect, give voice to the voiceless, educate, and probe. Using theatre as a tool to bring about social justice is my passion. My lifelong intrigue with theatre has stretched far beyond my own cultural and personal background. I have traveled the globe creating spaces for people to grow and connect in their communities through play, storytelling and movement. Theatre can transcend the single performance creating a transformational experience. It has piqued my interest in using theatre as a means to facilitate educational outreach and community development.”

Room 3 – [Strengthen] Running the Ultra Marathon:  Seeing your Special Needs Child through to Reach their Academic Goals

We have a special treat in Room 3, Beth Schoenlein, a parent and English Faculty Member at Ferris State University is going to share her journey of supporting and guiding her special needs child (now adult) to reach his academic goals.  And she is done and inspiring and amazing job!

Room 4 – [Strengthen] Let’s Talk Parent & Family Engagement! How it’s Written into Federal Policy & Ways to Engage at School

Annette Hines (@Appalachianaby), Trio Academic Coordinator for Talent Search at Morehead State University has about 300 students she follows and work with, and their families, especially as they get closer to college she works more with parents/guardians.  Getting her kids ready for college was difficult, she does this for a living, so for the average parent and average student they can make a mistake that can cost thousands.

Room 5 – [Strengthen] “But I’m Not a Teacher!” How to Manage Learning Under Lockdown

Author and Positive Psychologist, Dr. Robert Zeitlin (@drrobertzeitlin) joins us for a great session for parents to learn how to work with their children while they are learning at home.

“This is an overwhelming time for parents. There is no getting around how much stress the coronavirus pandemic is creating. It’s simply impossible to continue to make a living … while you take care of your family 24/7 … without getting any real break for yourself. And now you are facing distance learning head-on.

Even more than this endless list, the uncertainty is maddening. Without the luxury of feeling confident that you know what will happen next, you can’t make things normal for your kids.

If you have more questions than you can list, I want to give you a place to start. I am offering you a framework and a game plan that you can follow to return some sense of normalcy to your life and your family environment.

Ninety-nine percent of what the pandemic brought is destructive. Make this one percent constructive. Use the ideas in this book to turn “How the heck am I supposed to homeschool my kids?!” into an opportunity.”
